Martha Ugwu

Martha holds a BA in Health Services Management and a Masters degree in Public Health and HCAI, specialising in Infection Control and currently working as a Lead Nurse Infection Prevention and Control at St Georges NHS Trust. Martha’s career in the NHS spans over 20 years where she started work as a Registered Nurse and progressed through to Specialist positions encompassing, Midwife, Smoking Cessation Specialist Nurse, Modern Matron and Lead Nurse for Infection Prevention and Control. Martha has a keen interest in development issues especially those effecting Africa. She holds leadership positions in many Non Governmental Organisations (NGO) where her impact has been widely recognised. She is the Founder of Pan African Health Network, and Health Unrestricted, both providing innovative health advocacy and interventions to the Sub Saharan African Continent. She is a Board Member of Nsukka Welfare Association and Nsukka Elite Ladies Association since year 2008.

Martha is currently the UK National Coordinator for the African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS). The ATPS is a multi-disciplinary network of researchers, practitioners and policy makers that promotes science, technology and innovation (STI) policy research, dialogue and practice, for African Development. She is also a steering group member of the African Women for Science and Technology (AWFST) which was set up in 2009 to instigate the cultures of innovation amongst African women and build their confidence in the generation, use, mastery and self-governance of African STI for African development. She is a committed member of the NHS BME Network who has participated at local and National level. Following a successful election in 2011, Martha is currently serving at the National executive Committee as one of the Local Network Facilitators who is passionate about positive outcome for BME patients and staff. Martha has published papers on Smoking Cessation in the community.
